Despite having a model of one and enthused about it I'd never seen a trackmobile in the flesh before. Until yesterday, that is. I was out and about driving around the roads around the rail yards in Saint Paul and was just about to turn around as the road was a dead end. When what did I spy just beyond the gates of a small chemical works? A trackmobile! Not the same type as my model a smaller one. But a trackmobile none the less.

Trackmobiles are very cool. They can also save a company some money in the long run. The newspaper company in the area that I've been researching was paying a lot of money on demurrage charges, mostly because they relied on UP to move cars to their dock from their storage tracks. Once they acquired a trackmobile and moved things themselves they never paid a demurrage charge again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that insight Tom:
ReplyDeleteSome folks think they look cool some folks I know hate the look of them. I find it hard to believe that such a little thing could haul anything more than one car.
I know what you mean, but I bet the limiting factor is braking more than moving :-)
